The Macellum, off the Cardo near the South Theatre, was Jerash's meat and fish market — an oval courtyard ringed by shops around a central fountain, its butchers' blocks still identifiable in the stone.
It is a rare, well-preserved Roman market layout. Travellers who hire car & driver in Jordan pass it on the main circuit, and full package tours to Jordan use it to explain Roman daily life.
